RISE UP: Community Call to Action

Inspired by GAPA Banquet 2022, the theme of our Fall 2022 issue is “Community Call to Action.” Building on the Banquet’s energy, we feature perspectives that are centered on QTAPI individuals who are committed to building community and working towards creating change for the better.

 IN THIS ISSUE:

  •  Boy to Queen: Michael Trung Nguyen sketches a series of vivid vignettes that map out how we might find power in most interesting places.

  • In Remembrance: We pay tribute to Ken Hamai, a constant GAPA presence who built connection and community with so many.

  • Eating My Activism: Danny Wan offers compelling reasons on why he wants his 10-course Chinese dinner at the GAPA Banquet, and why you should join him.

  • Building Communities of Action: Howard Chan reflects on the status of queer and trans APIs in America and how GAPA finds its place and purpose within it.

  • Elevating the Need for Equity: Anjali Rimi provides her take on what it means to build communities of action.

  • Building Communities for Connection: Danny Tai Pham shares intimate reflections on his past and describes how communities of action are built on connections – from person to person and from within one's true self.

  • We Weave Stories Across Generations: Chali Lee finds his place both as a young person, seeking guidance and mentors, as well as an elder, able to share knowledge with those younger than himself.

  • I Learned the Power of Being Honest: Iris overcomes her fear and vulnerability as a nonbinary trans woman and finds healing in expressing herself.

  • A Call to Action Will Always Be There: César Cadabes gives a reckoning on how history has impacted the QTAPI community, as well as the resilience found in our collective response.

  • 10 Questions: A candidate for California State Assembly, Dublin City Councilmember Shawn Kumagai shares his thoughts and views in an exclusive Lavender Godzilla interview.
