Laramie, Wyoming We spent the morning at the University of Wyoming, where Matthew Shepard attended college. We were all taken aback by the warm welcome of both students, organizers of the event. Normally, about 30-40 people stop to listen at rally events and there were over 200 people at ours. The senator of Wyoming spoke first and gave a rousing endorsement of our mission. He spoke of the day to come that like other injustices in our nation's history, that this injustice will also be corrected. Our final stop in Laramie was to have a commemorative memorial for Matthew Shepard at the Fireside Lounge, the place where he was abducted. It was a deeply emotional experience for all of us when the two Unitarian Clergy (who are on board with us) gave a service of remembrance. The most amazing moment during the memorial was when it started to hail when individuals shared their personal experiences of hate crimes. It was as if the heavens opened up and spoke for Matthew Shepard. We openly wept several times as we remembered, sang, and prayed. It was truly a profound experience. Jeanne and Jennifer |
