October 4, 2004 Day 1 of The Marriage Express Caravan

Jeanne and Jennifer’s day started off bright and early, waking at 4:45 am. We arrived at the MacArthur Bart Station at 6:00 am. City Councilman Danny Wan arrived later to send us off with a proclamation declaring the week as “Marriage Express Week” in Oakland.

Our first challenge was changing into our wedding gowns in a cramped toilet room on a moving bus. After being jolted around a few times, we emerged a little bruised but beautiful and camera ready.

We arrived before schedule in Sacramento and had time to sing songs and play percussion instruments on the sidewalk in front of the State Capitol. The energy was in high gear! Our first rally went off without a hitch and there was a small but very supportive group waiting for us. Jeanne gave her speech regarding her nephew’s wedding and got a rousing response at times.

We marched, we sang, we chanted.

Our next stop was Reno, Nevada. It was mainly a press conference on the steps of the State Building with several reporters and photographers present. Since we were in the marriage capitol of the world, 3 couples in wedding garb went on a side trip to the “Silver Bells Wedding Chapel” and asked to be married. Do we need to tell you what happened?

Onward to our next destination…Laramie, Wyoming. It will take a full day of traveling to get there, so more adventures in a couple of days. We are having a great time getting to know all of the wonderful people on our caravan.

Our pictures are shot in black and white because marriage equality is a black and white issue.
